Once on this Island Jr.

Audition Materials

Character Breakdown &

Audition Requirements

Below you will find an expandable list of all characters in Once on This Island JR., including their role descriptions, vocal range requirements, and the materials needed for auditions.

Each role requires students to prepare the following:

Audition Side

A short acting excerpt (provided by Camp Hughes) that reflects the character’s personality, emotional qualities, and storytelling style.

Featured Song Cut

Students will also sing a featured song associated with that role.

If a character does not have a distinct solo or featured number in the JR version, an alternative audition song is listed for them and must be used instead.

Please review the materials carefully so you can prepare the correct combination of acting and vocal components for your audition. We encourage all students to explore these roles, try new characters, and choose parts that best reflect their strengths and potential.

Callback Dance Requirement

Students who are invited to callbacks will also participate in a dance/movement audition.

This portion of the process helps us assess:

  • ✔ Coordination and musicality

  • ✔ Ability to learn choreography quickly

  • ✔ Expressiveness and confidence through movement

  • ✔ Ensemble awareness and stage presence

No prior dance experience is required — our choreography team will teach a short, age-appropriate combination during the callback session. Students should dress comfortably, wear closed-toe shoes or dance shoes if they have them, and be ready to move safely.

This movement assessment ensures that every performer, whether in a lead role, supporting role, or ensemble part, is able to contribute fully to the storytelling of Once on This Island JR., which is a highly physical, dance-driven production.
